False! No Way! If that were true, we’d all be grey by high school….. Going grey is genetic. This happens when the cells that produce melanin, which is your hair pigment, no longer produces colour. Stress can cause hair loss and other adverse effects, but it won’t cause your hair to go grey. As much as we would love to blame those around us causing us stress, it won’t have any impact on our melanin production, or lack of. Blame, (or thank) your ancestors….
Yes and no, but its not all in your head. If you think your hair care products are no longer doing their job, they have most likely worked to the best of their ability, and your hair needs have changed. Our hair needs change just like our skin does, which can be due to climate, change of colour, type of water use, hormonal changes, heat styling or medications. We recommend reanalysing the hair at the end of each bottle. Remember too, shampoo twice, condition or use a treatment mask afterwards for optimal results.
Huh?! But doesn’t our hair grow from the scalp? If you are trying to grow your hair, we recommend a haircut every 8 – 10 weeks, paired with a good home care routine. This will keep the ends of your hair clean and tidy, remove any split ends and keep your hair looking fuller whilst it is in grow out phase. Visually, this looks like your hair is growing longer because the ends are thicker, therefore appearing like its growing faster. Stimulating the scalp with gentle brushing and massage helps by promoting good blood flow to the papilla (hair bulb), healthy roots = healthy growth.
This is one we hear a lot... a little too much… and it does not help. It can have the opposite effect! Styling products, silicones, oils and debris prevent the colour from penetrating the hair adequately. We recommend you wash your hair 24-48 hours prior to your salon service. Please. It is also a more favourable experience for your stylist and will be appreciated!
Dandruff vs Dry Scalp. Dandruff is caused by an oily scalp, aka over production of dead skin cells and oil, which requires a specialised or medicated shampoo. Dry scalp can be caused by hot showers, dry shampoos, quality of shampoo/conditioner, build up of silicones, not scrubbing the scalp enough when washing, lack of moisture, psoriasis, eczema, or dermatitis. An itchy scalp can be caused by any of the above, change of weather, stress, or hormones. Cool rinse after conditioning hair helps to soothe the scalp and close the pores.
False! This is just that your hair is in a phase of going grey and only one hair can grow per follicle, so a grey hair will grow back. We recommend embracing the change or colouring those grey hairs if you don’t want to see them. However, we will forgive you if you rip them out. Only one at a time though….
Yes and No! Controversial to what the TV ads say, the only way split ends are repaired is by cutting them off. Regular trims and specialised split end haircutting is the way to fix this. We can work together on what is causing your split ends and recommend a preventative method. A number of factors that contribute to split ends are: repetitive use of heat tools, blow drying, aggressive brushing, wind, brushing the hair whilst it is wet, straightener temperature is too high, irregular hair trims or too much protein added to the hair. One thing we love doing, is getting rid of split ends and giving the hair life again!
“I use purple shampoo and my hair is still brassy”, a phrase we hear often with new guests in the salon. Purple or silver shampoo is designed for light to platinum blondes, to neutralise gold tones. Purple will never tone out orange or red in the hair. Blue based shampoos are for orange tones, maintaining dark blondes/light browns. Green based shampoos are for red tones, maintaining brunettes. One product range, consisting of shampoo, conditioner and mask that we cannot live without is our Matrix Total Results So Silver, Brass Off and Dark Envy. If you have any kind of brass, we have got you covered!
